What Now?

Getting diagnosed with diabetes is like getting hit with a ton of bricks.  Not only do questions arise among patients and their families, like “Why me? “What did I do? What caused this?,” but also, there is no simple way to understand and manage type 1 diabetes.  It takes time and practice and the help of a good diabetes team who understands type 1 diabetes and the fear patients and their families have about both the high and low blood sugars, which can be extraordinarily frightening.

It is important to know the symptoms of hypoglycemia (profuse sweating, anxiety nervousness, change in thinking) and to have a prescription for a glucagon pen for severe lows and glucose gel, juice or glucose tablets on hand for a low sugar.  It takes time and patience to understand approximately how many points each each unit or half unit of short-acting insulin brings down glucose.  It takes time to come up with a plan that works and then things change with exercise and with illness.
